Eel Garden dive site, Menjangan Island — garden eels on white sand slope
Menjangan Island · West Bali National Park

Eel Garden — Menjangan Island Dive Site

5–35m All Levels Wall Reef

Overview

Eel Garden sits on the northwestern point of Menjangan Island, where Menjangan’s healthiest hard corals meet a white sand slope colonised by garden eels at around 20 metres. Most divers begin with a slow descent down the wall, watching for pygmy seahorses on the gorgonian fans, before drifting out across the sand at the end of the dive to spend a few quiet minutes with the eels. It’s a gentle, photogenic site that consistently delivers Menjangan’s signature visibility.

Marine life & what to expect

The wall section is rich with hard and soft corals, with sand-eels and longnose hawkfish reliably tucked into the gorgonians. The sand slope at the base is the namesake feature — a colony of garden eels that retract as you approach, then re-emerge if you wait still. Common sightings include:

Best for

Underwater photographers and divers who want an easy, image-rich Menjangan dive. The combination of macro on the gorgonians, wide-angle on the corals, and the unusual garden eel colony at the end gives variety without high cognitive load. Equally suited to newer divers building confidence on a Menjangan day trip — the gentle profile, predictable conditions, and short surface intervals make it a popular second-dive choice. Buoyancy is the one skill that pays off here: garden eels are sensitive to disturbance and will retract if you kick the sand or descend on top of them, so a slow, neutral approach lets you spend more time with them.

When to dive it

Menjangan is divable year-round, but visibility peaks in the dry season (April–November). Mornings tend to be calmer; we usually run two-tank Menjangan day trips with Eel Garden as the second dive of the day so you’re relaxed and acclimatised. The site sits inside West Bali National Park, so a park entrance fee applies (already included in our Menjangan day-trip prices). Sundays and public holidays carry a small park surcharge. The boat ride out from Pemuteran takes around 30 minutes through quiet, sheltered water — a gentle warm-up for the day. We brief the dive on the boat before kitting up, and our guide-to-diver ratio of 1:4 means everyone gets attention without feeling crowded.
