Pemuteran's Most
Personal Dive Centre

Located in Pemuteran Bay on Bali's tranquil North West coast, Karang Divers operates 4 beachfront dive centres in cooperation with the finest resorts in the bay. We dive Menjangan Island and the local reefs — some of Indonesia's most diverse underwater terrain.

We believe in small groups and personal service. Our maximum guide-to-diver ratio is 1:4 — because you cannot safely enjoy and respect the ocean with big crowds. As an active supporter of coral reef restoration, we are proud to lead the Agung Prana Reef recovery project — restoring Pemuteran Bay’s reef from the community, for the community.

We're proud to be the diving home for Beluga Reisen guests in Pemuteran — Germany's leading dive travel specialist sends divers to all four of our beachfront bases.

Agung Prana Reef — Community Restoration Project

Agung Prana Reef is more than a coral restoration project—it is a commitment to the future of Pemuteran. At Karang Divers, we are proud to actively lead and support the restoration of this extraordinary reef, one of the most important marine ecosystems in Pemuteran Bay, rich in both ecological value and local history.

Led by marine scientist Kadek Fendi Wirawan and fully supported by Karang Divers, this initiative is built by the community and for the community. Local coastal residents are trained, employed, and directly involved in reef restoration using sustainable, science-based methods that rebuild damaged coral structures while protecting the natural balance of the marine environment.

This project is also proudly supported by Siesta Villa, located directly in front of the entrance to Agung Prana Reef. As divers themselves and strong local supporters, the owners have believed in this project from the very beginning. Their commitment reflects the core philosophy behind our restoration model: true conservation is only possible when local communities and local businesses work together with a shared long-term vision.

Our goal is not only to restore coral, but to create lasting impact—stronger marine biodiversity, healthier reefs, better opportunities for local families, and a new generation of ocean guardians who understand the true value of conservation.

This project proves that conservation and tourism can grow together, creating a sustainable future where both the reef and the community thrive.

Read More About Our Conservation Work

Background

The Agung Prana Coral Reef — named after a long-serving pillar of the Pemuteran community — was once a thriving shallow reef that sustained local fishermen and marine ecosystems for generations. Decades of anchoring pressure, unregulated fishing, and coral bleaching events caused widespread degradation. By the time restoration work began, large areas of the reef had become rubble fields with minimal coral cover and sharply reduced fish populations.

Our Restoration Method

At Agung Prana Reef, our restoration method is based on simplicity, sustainability, and respect for nature. We use only Natglue (natural glue) to carefully attach healthy coral fragments and branches directly onto damaged or dead reef structures. This method allows the corals to naturally grow, regenerate, and reconnect with the existing ecosystem without artificial frames or intrusive materials. By working with nature instead of against it, we help restore the reef to its original vibrant and healthy state—bringing back marine biodiversity, strengthening the ecosystem, and returning Agung Prana Reef to the glorious underwater paradise it once was.

Community Impact

At Karang Divers, coral restoration is not only about rebuilding reefs—it is about building people and creating a stronger future for our community. For the past three years, we have operated a scholarship program for Indonesian nationals, offering two positions at a time for a six-month intensive training in diving and coral conservation. During this period, all participants are fully supported by us while they complete their professional training and become certified SSI Dive Masters with hands-on experience in reef restoration and marine conservation.

This program creates real career opportunities in marine tourism and conservation while developing skilled local professionals who understand the importance of protecting our ocean. Now, we are expanding this initiative by opening a new scholarship program for local teenagers from the age of 15, helping create the next generation of reef gardeners in Pemuteran.

Beyond the direct impact on the community and local businesses, our goal is to inspire a deeper connection between local people and the sea. We want to help change mindsets about coral reefs, marine life, and our shared responsibility in protecting them. By educating and involving the community, we create long-term stewardship where conservation becomes part of daily life, ensuring that Pemuteran's reefs remain healthy, productive, and beautiful for future generations.

How to Support

Supporting Agung Prana Reef is simple: come and experience Pemuteran. Our conservation model is built on sustainability, not on direct donations. We believe that many restoration projects fail because they depend entirely on temporary funding or donations—once the money ends, the work, monitoring, and commitment often disappear as well. Our goal is to create a self-sustaining system where conservation continues through responsible tourism and community involvement.

By visiting Pemuteran, staying in local hotels and guesthouses, eating in local restaurants, enjoying local wellness services such as massage therapy, and exploring the beauty of Pemuteran Bay through snorkeling and diving, you directly contribute to the local economy and the long-term protection of the reef. Respecting the environment, avoiding pollution, and supporting local people are all part of protecting this ecosystem. Choosing snorkeling and diving activities with Karang Divers is also a direct way to support the restoration and ongoing care of Agung Prana Reef.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions
Menjangan Island
What can I see at Menjangan Island?

Expect spectacular coral walls, reef sharks, sea turtles, schooling fish, nudibranchs, electric clams, lion fish, moray eels, and abundant reef life. Pygmy seahorses, frogfish, and occasional whale shark sightings make Menjangan one of Bali's most exciting dive destinations.

What are the water conditions at Menjangan Island?

Menjangan is known for calm conditions and exceptional visibility, often 20–40m, ideal for all skill levels. Water temperature stays 27–30°C year-round. Seasonal winds may affect which side of the island is accessible, but our guides always find the best conditions on the day.

Can I do a night dive at Menjangan Island?

Night dives are not permitted at Menjangan Island — it's a protected national park with day-trip access only. However, we offer excellent night dives and Mandarin fish dusk dives on Pemuteran's local reefs, steps from your hotel.

Can I walk around or stay on Menjangan Island?

Menjangan is part of Taman Nasional Bali Barat (West Bali National Park) — day visits only, no overnight stays. Two access points (Pos I and Pos II) with basic facilities. Lunch is taken on the boat between dives.

When is the best time to dive Menjangan?

April to November is prime season — calm seas, excellent visibility (20–40 m), and settled weather. That said, Menjangan is diveable year-round: the island sits inside West Bali National Park’s protected bay, so even during the wet season currents remain mild and conditions are rarely cancelled. Whale shark sightings are most common October–November.

What is the water temperature at Menjangan Island year-round?

Water temperature at Menjangan stays consistently warm at 27–30°C (81–86°F) year-round. A 3 mm shorty wetsuit is comfortable for most divers; those who feel the cold can request a full suit. Visibility is typically 20–40 m, making Menjangan one of the clearest dive sites in Bali.

What marine life will I see at Menjangan?

Menjangan is famous for its biodiversity. Expect reef sharks, green and hawksbill sea turtles, schooling fish, moray eels, electric clams, lion fish, and nudibranchs on almost every dive. Macro highlights include pygmy seahorses and frogfish hiding among the gorgonian fans. Whale sharks are occasionally spotted October–November. The coral walls themselves — starting from just 3 m — are among the most intact in Bali.

Diving
Do I need experience to dive with you?

Not at all. Our Discover Scuba Diving program is for complete beginners — no certification needed. A short briefing, pool session, then a guided ocean dive. Instructors speak English, German, French and Indonesian.

What time do the dive boats depart?

Menjangan Island trips depart at 9:00am. Please arrive 30 minutes before for equipment fitting and briefing. Shore dives and night dives can be arranged at different times — confirm when booking.

Do you offer dive trips every day?

Yes — we operate daily, rain or shine. Pemuteran is one of Bali's drier areas and we very rarely experience conditions that prevent diving.

How many divers per guide?

Maximum 1 divemaster per 4 divers — always. We believe you cannot safely enjoy and respect the ocean in large groups. This is something we're proud of and will never compromise on.

What's included in the dive price?

All prices include a full equipment set (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins), air tank, and a certified guide. Boat dives include the boat trip. The National Park entrance fee (IDR 200,000 weekdays / IDR 300,000 weekends & public holidays) is included in all our Menjangan dive packages. See our full price list.

What is the best time of year to dive in Pemuteran?

Pemuteran offers excellent diving year-round. Dry season (April–October) brings calmest seas and best visibility, often 20–40m. The wet season is still very diveable. Water temperature stays 26–29°C throughout the year.

Are there any wrecks to dive in Pemuteran?

Yes — the Anker Wreck, a mysterious wooden shipwreck at 35–50m, is one of the deepest dives in the area. The Biorock structures in front of our centres also make a unique dive. Tulamben (USS Liberty) is reachable as a day trip.

What is Biorock and why is Pemuteran famous for it?

Biorock is the world's largest coral reef restoration project, located in Pemuteran Bay just steps from our dive centres. Submerged steel structures carry a low-voltage electric current that accelerates coral growth and helps damaged reef recover. Started in 2000 by the local community, the project now spans more than 70 structures and has become a global model for reef restoration. You can dive or snorkel directly from the beach to see them — lobster, garden eels, frogfish, and rare critters live among the structures, and night dives here are exceptional.

Can I see whale sharks, manta rays or mola mola in Pemuteran?

Yes — though these are seasonal and never guaranteed. Whale sharks are most often spotted around Menjangan Island and Pemuteran Bay between October and November, occasionally year-round. Manta rays and devil rays pass through during the rainy season (December–March). Mola mola sightings are rare but happen at deeper Menjangan dive sites such as Pos 2. Reef sharks (white-tip and black-tip) and eagle rays are seen far more reliably — almost weekly during peak season.

What wetsuit thickness do I need for Pemuteran and Menjangan?

Water temperature stays warm at 27–30°C (81–86°F) year-round. A 3 mm shorty wetsuit is comfortable for most divers and is included in our equipment package. Divers who feel the cold easily, or those doing multiple dives per day, may prefer a 3 mm full-length suit — just request one when you arrive. We carry a full range of sizes including children's wetsuits.

Is there a hyperbaric chamber near Pemuteran?

The nearest hyperbaric (recompression) chamber is at Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar, approximately 4 hours south by road. There is also a chamber at the Indonesian Navy facility in Banyuwangi, East Java, accessible via the Gilimanuk ferry. Decompression incidents are very rare on the dives we run — our profiles are conservative and we limit groups to 1:4 — but we strongly recommend DAN or DiveAssure dive insurance covering hyperbaric treatment before you travel.

What languages do your guides and instructors speak?

Our team speaks English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian. Course materials are available in multiple languages through both SSI and PADI digital learning platforms. Just let us know your preferred language when booking and we'll match you with the right instructor or guide.

Do you offer Nitrox?

Yes — Nitrox (Enriched Air 32%) is available for certified Enriched Air divers at an additional charge. We also offer the SSI & PADI Nitrox Specialty course.

Do I need dive insurance?

We strongly recommend travel and dive insurance covering underwater activities and potential hyperbaric treatment. DAN and DiveAssure are two widely used options. The nearest recompression chamber is in Denpasar.

I am travelling with non-divers. Can they join the boat?

Absolutely — non-divers can join as snorkelers or try our Discover Scuba Diving program. All boat passengers must be at least 5 years old.

Is Menjangan Island suitable for beginners?

Yes — Menjangan is one of the most beginner-friendly dive destinations in Bali. The bay is sheltered, currents are generally mild, and visibility is reliably excellent. The shallow coral gardens start from 3–5 m, making them perfect for new divers and snorkellers. Our instructors brief all guests thoroughly before entering the water.

What is the National Park entrance fee for Menjangan Island?

The West Bali National Park entrance fee is Rp 200,000 on weekdays and Rp 300,000 on weekends & public holidays. This fee is included in our Menjangan dive packages — no surprise charges at the park gate. The fee is paid directly to the park authority and supports conservation of the national marine reserve.

Courses & Certification
Are you SSI & PADI certified?

Yes — we are both an SSI (Scuba Schools International) and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certified dive centre. Both are among the world's leading dive certification agencies, internationally recognised wherever you dive. Instructors teach in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian.

What courses do you offer?

We offer the full range from Discover Scuba Diving (no cert needed) through Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, Nitrox Specialty and beyond to Divemaster level. See our price list for the full course menu.

How far in advance do I need to book a course?

We recommend booking courses as early as possible since instructor time needs to be reserved. For fun dives and snorkeling, 24–48 hours is usually sufficient — though we always try to accommodate last-minute requests.

What is the minimum age to learn to dive?

SSI & PADI Junior Open Water certification is available from age 10 (dives limited to 12 m with a certified adult). Full Open Water certification requires a minimum age of 15. Children aged 8+ can try a supervised Discover Scuba Diving experience in a pool or very shallow water. Snorkeling has no minimum age — we welcome families with young children.

Can I dive while pregnant or with medical conditions?

Pregnancy: diving is not recommended during pregnancy — the effects of pressure on a developing foetus are not well understood. We don't accept pregnant divers, but pregnant guests are welcome to snorkel on calm Pemuteran Bay sites or join the boat as non-divers.

Medical conditions: conditions including asthma, diabetes, heart disease, recent surgery, ear or sinus problems, and certain medications can affect fitness to dive. SSI and PADI use a standard medical questionnaire — if you tick "yes" to any item, you'll need a doctor's clearance signed before diving. If unsure, send us your concerns by WhatsApp before booking and we'll advise honestly.

What SSI & PADI courses do you offer?

As an SSI & PADI Certified Dive Centre we offer the full course pathway under both agencies: Discover Scuba Diving (try dive, no cert needed), Open Water Diver, Advanced Adventurer / Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Enriched Air Nitrox Specialty, and Divemaster. All certifications are internationally recognised and issued directly by SSI or PADI. See our price list for current course fees and package options.

Snorkeling
Is snorkeling available for non-divers?

Absolutely — we offer guided snorkeling to Menjangan Island, Pemuteran Bay, and the Biorock structures right in front of our centres. Suitable for all ages including children. Life jackets and full equipment provided.

Is there a guide for snorkeling trips?

Yes — all snorkeling trips include a dedicated, experienced guide who shows you the best spots and ensures your safety. We never send snorkelers out alone.

What should I bring on the boat?

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, light jacket or rash guard, and any personal medication. Drinking water is provided. Lunch is included on Menjangan day trips.

Getting Here
How do I get to Pemuteran, and can you organise transport?

Pemuteran is approximately 3 hours from Denpasar Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) by private car or shuttle. Public shuttle buses (Perama, Kura-Kura) also serve the route. We can organise pick-up and drop-off — airport transfers, between hotels, or from any area of Bali. Just contact us when booking.

What other activities are available in Pemuteran?

Beyond diving, Pemuteran offers dolphin-watching sunrise trips, Mandarin fish evening dives, sunset boat trips, temple visits, trekking, waterfall excursions and traditional village experiences. We're happy to help with recommendations.

How far is Pemuteran from Denpasar Airport (DPS)?

Pemuteran is approximately 130 km from Denpasar Ngurah Rai Airport, a drive of around 4 hours on the scenic central-mountain route. The road is well-maintained and the drive passes through Bedugul’s highlands, the Bratan lake temples, and Lovina before reaching the northwest coast.

Do you offer airport pickup and transfers?

Yes — we can arrange door-to-door transfers from Denpasar Airport (DPS), Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu, Lovina, or anywhere else in Bali. Just message us on WhatsApp when booking and we’ll organise a comfortable private car at a fair rate. We can also arrange transfers between dive centres if you’re multi-basing across Bali.

Booking & Payment
How do I book?

The easiest way is via WhatsApp or email — we respond quickly. Walk-ins are welcome for fun dives and snorkeling, subject to availability. Contact us at [email protected] or WhatsApp +62 819-3882-8859.

How is my booking confirmed?

After contacting us, we'll discuss your needs and send booking details. A deposit is required to confirm courses and day trips. Once received, your booking is confirmed and we'll send all the info you need.

How far in advance should I book fun dives or snorkeling?

We recommend booking at least 48 hours ahead, especially during peak season (July–August and December–January) when boats fill quickly. Same-day bookings are sometimes possible — the fastest way to check availability is via WhatsApp. Courses need more lead time: at least 2–3 days so we can reserve an instructor and prepare your materials.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept IDR cash, bank transfer, and major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard). All listed prices already include credit card processing fees — no surprises at checkout.

What is your cancellation policy?

We always do our best to accommodate rescheduling in case of illness or unexpected circumstances. Our full cancellation policy is shared at booking confirmation. We strongly recommend travel insurance covering trip interruptions.

What happens if the dive is cancelled due to weather?

Safety is our first priority. If we cancel a trip due to weather, sea conditions, or circumstances outside your control, you receive a full refund or we reschedule at no extra cost — your choice. We very rarely cancel Pemuteran Bay dives as the bay is sheltered, but Menjangan Island crossings can occasionally be postponed during rough north-coast swells. We always give as much notice as possible and will contact you by WhatsApp.
