Middle Reef sits offshore in Pemuteran Bay, halfway between the shore sites like Jetty and the deeper outer reefs. The geography is the appeal: it’s a coral garden with structure on every side, a stable depth profile that suits a wide range of certifications, and the kind of reliable schooling fish that make a dive feel busy without ever feeling rushed. It’s a five to ten minute boat ride from any of our four partner bases on the bay, which makes it a natural pick for a relaxed second dive of the day.
The reef is built on hard coral foundations with significant soft coral cover — sea fans, leather corals, and dendronephthya tucked into the lee of the structure. Schools of jacks and sweetlips work the water column above, while batfish hover in their typical small groups against the blue. Reef sharks pass through occasionally, and the reef itself supports a deep cast of resident species. Common sightings include:
Intermediate divers and photographers who want a relaxed, photogenic reef without committing to the depth profile of a site like Deep Reef. The combination of structure, soft coral colour, and reliable schooling fish makes Middle Reef a strong wide-angle and mid-range subject site. It’s also a popular pick for the second dive after a deeper morning dive — the depth profile keeps nitrogen loading manageable while still giving you a complete reef experience. Newer divers working through their first 10 to 30 logged dives find Middle Reef a forgiving site to build comfort and confidence on, with enough variety to keep every dive distinct.
Year-round. Pemuteran Bay’s natural shelter keeps the surface calm most of the year, and current on Middle Reef is typically mild. We tend to run it as a relaxed second dive after Deep Reef or Close Encounters, or as a stand-alone reef dive when the day’s plan is simply to spend time on a healthy reef. With our 1:4 guide-to-diver ratio, the dive is paced to the conditions and the divers in the group rather than to a fixed route. Pondok Sari, Taman Sari, Amertha Bali Villas, and Campo Beluga are all just minutes away by boat.
